At a Glance
The Sofitel Winter Palace is the most storied address in Upper Egypt. Built in 1886 by Thomas Cook & Son to host the European aristocracy wintering on the Nile, it has accommodated kings (Farouk), archaeologists (Howard Carter, Lord Carnarvon), and writers (Agatha Christie drafted Death on the Nile on the terrace). More than a century later it remains the benchmark by which every other Luxor hotel is measured.
The Setting
Set directly on the Corniche el-Nil on the East Bank, a five-minute walk from Luxor Temple and a short drive from Karnak. The hotel sits in 6 hectares of tropical gardens — a rare, lush oasis in a city that turns dusty fast. Across the river you can see the Theban Hills, gold at sunrise and pink at sunset.
The Rooms
Stay in the historic wing for the full Victorian experience: high ceilings, original parquet floors, antique writing desks, and balconies overlooking either the Nile or the gardens. River-view rooms are worth the upgrade — there is nothing quite like opening the shutters to a sunrise over the Theban necropolis. The modern Pavillon wing rooms are more contemporary and lower-priced but lack the soul.
Food & Drink
- 1886 Restaurant — formal fine dining in a chandelier-lit room. Jacket recommended. French-influenced menu with Egyptian touches.
- Royal Bar — wood-panelled, photographs of past guests on the walls, the best place in Luxor for a martini.
- Pool terrace — relaxed lunches under the palms.
- Breakfast in the Victorian Lounge is generous, with fresh juices and Egyptian specialities alongside the continental spread.
Service
Sofitel-standard, with a distinctly Egyptian warmth. The concierge can arrange everything from felucca sunset sails to private Valley of the Kings tours with Egyptologist guides.
